They knew me well enough to know that a standard 12 step program would not be enough to tame the demons I was facing. They had each been in and out of several programs with only limited results. After some research they had checked themselves into a rehab center that focused on alternative methods of treatment and since have never looked back. So when it came the unfortunate time in their lives to put their only son into a treatment center, they had no hesitation about what to do. They enrolled me in a form of nontraditional treatment that focused on holistic healing. In other words, this alternative rehab focused on me as a whole, as one with the earth and the universe. Sounds hokey right? Well it worked. And it’s been working for 20 plus years.

For anyone who has tried a standard twelve step program and gone into relapse, I highly recommend doing some research on an alternative drug rehab. After looking into a few of my own, I’ve uncovered many that may be right for all walks of life. There are centers strictly for men, women, GLBT, faith-based, and holistic. And since I’ve followed the holistic style of alternative drug rehab, please allow me to tell you a little about it and how it works.

First of all they focus on your dietary intake. They believe that improving the things you take into the body, the stronger your mind and body become. By removing additives and empty substances from the diet, the alternative drug rehab intends to move the brain to its highest levels of functioning.

Massage, meditation, and relaxation treatments are also important factors in the holistic approach to treating negative thoughts ofalcohol and drug addiction. We understand that taking away negative thinking and negative influences, will create a positive and substance free path to follow. Tai Chi and Yoga also play a large role in rebuilding the strength of mind and body in order for it to take care of itself and shut out any dependence on substances.

These are just a few of the things that the holistic approach to alternative drug rehab has to offer. After completing 5 short months in the program, I saw that my life had taken an entirely new direction. I wrote to my parents and let them know that I was going to train to become a holistic drug counselor and help others just like me. Holistic healing had opened my eyes to a world of peace and confident achievement. I urge anyone who may have a problem to seek help. But I want to show that there are alternative drug rehab programs out there if a 12 step program isn’t for you.

It is a common knowledge that drug addiction begins with having tolerated the drug in the body until the body develops dependency and addiction symptoms such as, craving, anxious behavior if not having to obtain the drug starts kicking in. This will be the time to call the individual an addict. For the drug dependent, the drug is his or her only rescue to function normally- normal in the sense that he doesn’t experience any anxiety and he feels relaxed and euphoric once he or she takes in the drug. Without knowing, the addict’s body eventually is destroyed by the drug through too much dependency that the chemical balance in the brain is destroyed and would then lead to psychological abnormalities. These psychological effects are manifested in the person’s behavior. Thus, affecting his everyday routine, interaction with other people, and his personal life.

Addiction, as a psychological illness, is treated not only through medication but also through modifying one’s behaviors and thinking process. Cognitive and behavioral therapies are used together with certain medications in order to cure addiction.

There are places that offer chances to treat these problems. These places are known as drug rehabilitation centers. These centers offer different programs that would fit different kinds of substance abuse problem. Different substance abuse problems need different treatment programs. In addition, looking for drug rehab program is easy, but finding for a drug rehab program that is effective and can meet your individual needs is not that easy. There are many components in a drug rehab program.

To cure drug dependency, drug detoxification program is the basic step. This is the process where the body is being cleaned by the toxins brought by the addiction. Addiction treatment services are still available, but the patient is not required to stay at the drug rehab facility.

Family addiction treatment is vital to a patient’s success in drug rehab programs. This is where most underlying issues of addiction are resolved. With this process, the patient is able to resolve any conflicts with family members which could have possibly triggered or caused the addiction. Also, the participation of family members connote a comforting significance to the patient that no matter what happens, family is always there to support whatever one is going through, in good times and in bad times. Also, during this period, the patient is no the only one who’s mistakes are discussed. Also, the probable faults and deficiencies of family members are also discussed and corrected.

Drug addiction is a serious and complex disorder. Appropriate and effective rehabilitation program should be used to treat the illness.

As an effect, the person slowly destroys his or her body as well as one’s own life. A person with drug abuse trouble may find it hard to accept the situation. In an emotional point of view, there are mild withdrawal symptoms. Detoxification can always help because it frees the body from the venoms brought by the drug. Furthermore, there is a program called the Intensive Outpatient wherein the individual in need of help for drug abuse has a steady home environment, good support system and is motivated and willing to give up drugs and/or alcohol. They are generally in near the beginning to middle stage drug abuse. If relapse occurs while in intensive outpatient therapy, housing treatment would be suggested. A therapist is also accessible for an individual therapy with the patient.

In drug related problems, there are a lot of treatment programs offered by different rehabilitation centers. Drug abuse is very likely to become substance addiction if intervention does not occur. Though prevention is still better than cure, drug abuse is a little bit better than addiction. Drug use may have been hiding aching feelings that will bubble up to the surface. Many in recovery experience depressed moods for up to a year or more as their brain reestablishes from the drug abuse. Learning new coping skills to defend against cravings, and how to relate them in stressful situations, is an ongoing process. Ongoing support is vital to work through those issues.

People who are into drug abuse should not be feared. Rather, they should be helped and supported in order for the to become well again.
